|
|
Of
old Sabine origins, in the II century Norcia became a flourishing
Roman municipium; it was a diocese until the VI century. The town
lies on the St. Scolastica plain,
|
|
encircled
by the Sibillini Mountains. Norcia is entirely surrounded by intact
boundary walls dating back to the XIV century and it is extremely
rich in important historical and artistic treasures.

You
can find the most important buildings of the town in the St. Benedict
square: the core of Norcia. According to tradition St. Benedict Basilica
was erected on the ruins of a roman |
|
palace:St.
Benedict and her twin sister St. Scolastica’s home. Next to the
Basilica, you can find the town-hall palace with its XIV century
porch. In front of the palace stands the “Castellina”:

a
fortress designed by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, a famous XVI century
architect. The Castellina is now a museum rich in extremely interesting
works of art. The other important monument to
|
|
be
found in this square is the Santa Maria Argentea Cathedral where
you can admire a XVI century fresco by Francesco Sparapane. Norcia
has many other valuable works of art that are worth visiting; among
them: the church dedicated to St. Augustine with XV - XVI century
frescoes and an interesting Romanesque-Gothic votive aedicula: the
“Tempietto” (1354).
